Jekyll Island
One of Georgia's "Golden Isles", Jekyll Island was once the playground to the Northeast's wealthiest families. In the late 1800s, captains of industry such as JP Morgan, Joseph Pulitzer, Marshall Field, Everett Macy, William Rockefeller, and Cornelius Vanderbilt were all members of the exclusive Jekyll Island Club and many built "cottages" as their winter retreats. These cottages (as large as 10,000 square feet) still stand in the island's Historic District. In addition to the historic Jekyll Island Club Hotel and the surrounding cottage colony, Jekyll boasts eight miles of beach, abundant marshes and picturesque moss-draped oaks. The Jekyll Island Authority carefully manages growth on this state-run Island. Currently underway is construction of a new hotel, new state-of-the-art convention center and retail complex. The retail area named Beach Village will consist of nearly 30 shops and restaurants as well as 60 lofts. Three new beachfront hotels, a new convention center and a revamped Great Dunes Park are all a part of the revitalization plan. Construction is scheduled to be completed by 2012.
