Brunswick, Georgia
Founded in 1771, historic Brunswick, Georgia's city streets are laid out in the grid style following James Oglethorpe's Savannah plan. Downtown Brunswick is home to historic Victorian homes and picturesque public buildings and squares. Located on a peninsula, the East River and Turtle River both provide direct access to the intracoastal waterway and Atlantic Ocean. The port of Brunswick is a centerpiece of the town-George Washington proclaimed Brunswick one of five original ports of entry for the United States. During World War II, 16,000 workers produced 99 Liberty Ships that were launched from the harbor. Today, the port is the sixth busiest automobile port in the United States and Brunswick is the center of Georgia's shrimp and crab industry. Each October, Brunswick's 16,000 residents celebrate their most notorious dish, Brunswick Stew, with the annual "Rockin' Stewbilee." Over 50 teams compete to earn the title of Best Brunswick Stew. Each month, the shops and galleries along Newcastle Street host a "First Friday" open house event. And the historic Ritz Theater is home to traveling productions, concerts and art exhibits.
